How To:
The goalkeeper passes the ball to the defender in the area. Defender passes into the attackers and then join in and help to defend. Attackers must exploit the temporary 2v1 situation and create a goal scoring opportunity before the defender can recover.
Coaching Points:
Speed of attack, use the space available.
Draw the defender to free your teammate. Attack space quickly and take shooting opportunities when they are available, follow in on your shot and react first to any rebounds.
How To:
Play a quick 1-2 in field before passing out to the winger in the channel, the winger dribbles up and delivers a cross for the players to finish.
Coaching Points:
Pass quickly so the ball can be distributed wide to the winger early. The emphasis is on delivering a cross.
Players in the middle shouldn't be dribbling the ball too much, just getting used to watching their winger and anticipating the cross.
Encourage the wingers to play the ball into dangerous areas rather than attempt to pick out players too much. An example of this would be aiming for the edge of the 6 yard box in the 'areas of uncertainty'. Encourage creativity here.
How To:
First player takes a shot on goal simulating a free kick then moves in field to play a give and go with the player on the next cone, the next player takes a shot. Once that player has taken their shot they turn and play a give and go with the next player on the cone allowing them to take a shot. Once the third player has taken their shot they receive the ball from the player on the 4th cone and dribble wide. The player on the 4th cone makes an inside run and finishes the cross. Each player moves to the next cone in line.
Coaching Points:
Aim for corners and try and be clever with your finishes where possible. Be creative and experiment with different types of shot/shooting angles.
How To:
Setup two start lines and cones on the field as shown, one player from either line can go at the same time. The first player must take a touch out of their feet using the outside of their foot to give themselves room to take the shot. The other player must approach the cones as if taking on a defender, perform a skill or move to get around the defender and take the shot on at the first opportunity. The players join the back of the next line.
Coaching Points:
Step into the shot, remember ABC's:
Accuracy, basic shooting technique and cleverness of finish.
How To:
The ball starts with the supporting attackers who look to play the ball into the main area to their teammates who then attempt to create a scoring opportunity. Defenders cannot move into the supporting midfield coned area but, can apply real pressure to the more advanced forwards.
Coaching Points:
Attackers should look to lose their marker.
Ex: Dropping deeper and quickly becoming close for the short pass.
Consider passing back to your supporting midfielders to rebuild the attack or change the point of attack, remember, supporting midfielders are facing the goal you are trying to attack and should be looking for gaps playing the pass quickly.
How To:
Play an even numbered Small Sided Game within a set area, increase area size to cater to more players. 35 x 30-yard area for 4v4 with a 10 yard area at either end. 3 Pop up goals placed at either end. Normal game rules apply but players are not allowed into the end zones, placed shots must be from inside the main area.
Coaching Points:
Accuracy over power, look to place your shots, there are 3 targets to aim at, try to be clever with your play, a team mate may be open and in a much better scoring position across the field. Plant your foot next to the ball and strike through the line of the ball for accuracy, consider using the instep for more control.
